Jeri Barak-Cunningham (Alpha Cohort), Associate Professor in the Department of Plant Pathology, uses an activity she calls “memo to the instructor” to get her students’ thoughts about her class and what they are getting from the course.

Through this activity, usually conducted mid-course, Jeri gets direct feedback from her students on what they believe would help them learn more effectively, and her students take the time to think about their progress and changes they can make to reach their own learning goals. She sees that her students appreciate having their voice heard when she incorporates their ideas into class throughout the rest of the semester.

Outside of the classroom Jeri focuses her studies on advancing the field of plant-microbe interactions by studying the biology of S. enterica in association with plants. She hopes her studies will work towards reducing food-borne illness caused by consumption of contaminated healthy food stuff such as fresh produce.
