they or she
Naomi Salmon - a smiling person in their mid-thirties with curly, shoulder-length brown hair, light skin, glasses, and a floral scarf.

Dr. Naomi Salmon joined MTLE in January 2019. Prior to joining MTLE, Naomi was involved in a range of teaching assistant professional development initiatives within the UW-Madison English department, the College of Letters and Science, and L&S Learning Support Services. Naomi has worked as a teaching assistant and instructor of record in literary studies and composition classrooms at UW-Madison and is particularly interested in writing instruction.

Naomi also loves learning about others’ research, something that was the highlight of their past years as an instructor at UW-Madison’s Writing Center. It was the opportunity to serve as the Assistant Director of Introductory Literature TA Training at UW that cemented their interest in educational development. College classrooms are spaces where students explore topics that may be highly personal to them, and this experience highlighted how transformative it can be for instructors to take part in a community of practice devoted to teaching and learning.

Naomi sees teaching as an act of generosity and values the opportunity to learn about others’ teaching experiments—successful or otherwise! Teaching is an iterative process, so they especially celebrate the conversations that emerge when activities or assignments don’t go as planned.

In addition to Naomi’s current role in MTLE, they are a member of the larger Center for Teaching, Learning, and Mentoring team. In this role, they help instructors incorporate evidence-based, inclusive learning principles into their course design and redesign processes.

Outside of work, Naomi enjoys trying to spot cranes and shrews in Cherokee Marsh.
